Are Azercell employees prohibited wearing hidjab?

15 January 2008 [12:20] - TODAY.AZ
A signal on the violation of human rights has been received by the Center for Protection of Freedom of Consciousness and Religion (DEVAMM).

According to the Center, one of the Azercell - biggest mobile operator in Azerbaijan - employees appealed to the Center regarding violation of her rights for wearing hidjab (headscarf).

According to the appeal, one of the Azercell managers held a "prophylactic work" with this officer and told her not to wear hidjab at work. She was also warned that in case she does not follow the "recommendations", she will have negative results for her career in the company.

In this respect, chairman of DEVAMM Ilgar Ibragimoglu has sent a letter to Azercell president Khalim Atesh.

The letter reflects concern connected with the signal on violation of human rights.

The DEVAMM chairman informed the Azercell management that the Constitution of the country and international and legal documents, including the UN General Declaration of Human Rights, UN Pact on Civil and Political Rights, European Convention on Protection of Rights and Liberties, confirm the right for the freedom of consciousness, as well as the right to wear headscarf.

Ibragimoglu considers that this is not a purposeful line of the management of the company but rather a misunderstanding caused by the careless actions of middle chain managers.

He expressed hope that Azercell management will undertake all necessary steps for the soonest settlement of the problem and will demonstrate tactfulness and delicacy.
