14 Azeris arrested in Georgia

The State Committee on affairs of Azerbaijanis living abroad is interested with a picket arranged by residents of Damya Gerarkhi village of Marneuli district on Wednesday as a sign of protest.

As Trend reports according to Nazim Ibrahimov, the Chairman of the Committee, employees of the State Committee contacted to the Union of Azerbaijani Intelligentsia in Georgia and Embassy in Tbilisi. "We should work in this direction to prevent such events. The growth of events which could cause clashes should not be allowed. A decree on the establishment of the Azerbaijani-Georgian intergovernmental working group is expected to come out shortly and this body will be involved in the resolution of the problem. It is necessary approach the problems of Azerbaijanis residing in Georgia in a complex way. The working group should not only state its attitude towards any problem in future," Ibrahimov underlined.

Fizuli Najafov, the Deputy Chairman of the Department for Georgia at the State Committee, said that, as far as he knew, special division participated in the dispersal of the picket. 14 Azerbaijanis, including women, were arrested. The action was staged in connection with the division and privatization of lands.

According to Najafov, Georgia should gather absence of problems in the resolution of the said problems of Azerbaijani population of Georgia, as the Georgian legislation on land reforms does not change anything in favor of Azerbaijanis. He also noted that action plan of the Azerbaijani-Georgian intergovernmental working group included no concrete proposals on reconsideration of the land law.
