German Unity Day celebrated in Baku

Germany’s national holiday – the 25th anniversary of German Unity Day has been marked in the Azerbaijani capital city Baku.

The German embassy arranged an official reception to mark the country’s national holiday on October 1.

Addressing the ceremony, German Ambassador to Azerbaijan Heidrun Tempel highlighted the history of German Unity Day and current state of relations between the two countries.

She recalled that Germany was one of the first countries to recognize Azerbaijan’s independence, expressed her confidence that bilateral relations in various fields between the two countries would further develop.

On behalf of the Azerbaijani government, Deputy Foreign Minister Mahmud Mammadguliyev congratulated the German people on the occasion of the landmark day.

He highlighted expansion of relations between Azerbaijan and Germany in various fronts, stressing the importance of developing cooperation especially in the fields of economy, education and culture.

Mammadguliyev added that 157 companies with German capital operate in Azerbaijan and the two countries intend to continue the development in this direction.

The German companies are operating in Azerbaijan's commercial, construction, industrial, banking, insurance, agriculture, as well as service sectors.

He further said about 120 students have received education in various universities in Germany in recent year.

The official reception brought together state and government officials of Azerbaijan, MPs, ambassadors of foreign countries in Baku and public figures.

Diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Germany were established in February 1992. The economic relations between the two countries are developing successfully. To date, 67 documents have been signed between Azerbaijan and Germany in various fields.

Azerbaijan has sent about 200 entrepreneurs and young managers to various German cities in 2009-2014 to take training courses within a joint program to upgrade their skills in business management.
