The Archeology and Ethnography Institute under the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences is currently overseeing an expedition to Azerbaijan’s Dashkasan region.

According to expedition head Bakhtiyar Jalilov, the archeologists are conducting excavations at five gravesites and a burial mound in Zeylik village.

They have so far discovered a large number of samples of earthenware, metal jewelry, spearheads, fragments of a dagger, bracelets, necklaces, and other jewelry dating from to the end of the Bronze to early Iron Age.

The findings can be traced back to the X-IX centuries BC.

Earlier, Azerbaijani and French archeologists had discovered a 3,000-year-old sarcophagus in Monidigah, Lerik.

At the site, they also found samples of artifacts, including pottery, jewelry, weapons, and household equipment. All of the findings were placed in special containers for preservation and taken to France for closer examination at a laboratory.

This is not the first joint Azerbaijani-French archaeological expedition. Recently, a team completed a mission to study Neolithic monuments in Azerbaijan’s Tovuz region, where a total of 12 French experts participated.

The joint expedition explored the VI millennium BC settlement of Mentesh, during which they discovered a mound measuring 160 square meters, 30 human remains, ruins, objects made from bones, pottery, stone, and iron tools.
