A major part of the polluted areas of Baku's Absheron district has been cleared of dirt, Director of Environmental Monitoring Department under the Azerbaijani Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources Matanat Avazova told Trend on July 30.

She said that the cleanup has shown positive results and that it has encouraged the government to further continue improving the ecological situation in the country.

"Until 1990, the territory of the polluted lands in the Absheron district was thousands of hectares. Their territory has significantly decreased. Polluted lands have been cleaned and put to use. Of course, this is not the end, and works in this regard are underway by the Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry," Avazova noted.

Touching upon the efforts carried out in the treatment of Caspian Sea water, she said that the results were satisfactory.

"Sea water is monitored both by us [Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry] and the Health Ministry. The spread of dirt in the polluted lands has already been prevented. Much has been done in this regard. I think that we will be able to absolutely eliminate the problem of pollution of sea water in the near future," Avazova added.

The Caspian Sea is under constant threat of pollution. The sources of the pollution are river runoff, onshore industrial and municipal wastewater, offshore and onshore oil extraction, etc.

The pollution of this natural water basin dates back to the Soviet Union. Experts believe that river and sea pollution can be traced to the Caspian’s uncertain international legal status, maritime traffic, and coastal industrial facilities. New sources of pollution are being created as a result of the changing sea level, which floods coastal areas. Pesticides used in agriculture from Soviet times wash into the Caspian’s tributaries and flow into the sea, affecting its ecological state.

A large-scale program, which would integrate all coastal countries, is being considered as a solution to the ecological problem.

Also, special attention should be paid to monitoring, which would be carried out by different facilities, including remote monitoring by satellites, and observation mechanisms on the ground. Such a program would naturally create rapid information transfer on the state of the marine environment.
