Baku is just a few hours away from the cold weather. The heavy frost shrouding many European countries is now approaching the capital.

On January 8, a heavy blizzard is expected in Baku and Absheron Peninsula, said Gulshad Mammadova, the Deputy Director of the National Hydrometeorology Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources .

The forecasters predict the strengthening of the north-west wind in the coming days.

The temperature will be 2-4 degrees C above zero at night and 0 degree C during day. In the evening the temperature is expected to be 2 degrees C below zero.

Snow and sleet as well as strong north-west wind are also predicted in Azerbaijani regions.

The temperature will be from 2 degrees C below zero to 3 degrees C above zero. In the mountains, the temperature will stand at 8-13 degrees C below zero at night, while in the highlands 18-23 degrees C below zero and 2-7 degrees C below zero during the day.

The officials have called on the drivers to remain vigilant as the roads are expected to be covered with ice.

“In connection with upcoming bad weather conditions, the risk of road traffic accidents will increase. Drivers and pedestrians should be more careful. During rain and snow cars should move slowly and keep their distance with others. Avoid sudden maneuvers,” the Police said. “In addition, drivers must ensure that the tire treads have sufficient depth, and they should turn on dipped headlights and parking lights in poor visibility.”

It seems that only children will be happy to hear this news. For Baku residents hurrying to work will be hardly a pleasant surprise.
