Azerbaijan is not threatened by the avian influenza, said the State Veterinary Service under the Azerbaijani Agriculture Ministry.

In order to prevent penetration of the avian influenza virus by migration of birds into Azerbaijan, another monitoring operation has been started in Azerbaijan since November 17.

The monitoring is being carried out by specialists and employees of the ministries of Agriculture, Health and Environment and Natural Resources.

The monitoring is carried out in areas where migratory birds inhabit temporarily - in Absheron Peninsula, national parks and Shabran, Salyan, Agjabadi and Lankaran regions’ reserves, as well as in coastal and other areas of the country.

The results of the monitoring operation will be announced on November 28. The monitoring held on October 20 this year revealed no presence of avian influenza in Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan is among a number of countries, where migratory birds fly to. Therefore, wetland birds such as ducks, geese, and others hibernate in the country. They usually settle where there is water. These birds fly to Azerbaijan from Russia.

The agriculture ministry prohibits the sale and consumption of migratory and wild birds and hunting them.

According to WHO, 330 people worldwide have died from the virus since its discovery in 2003.

Earlier in April, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) warned about the revealing of new kind of avian influenza in the south-east Asia. The flu was reported in China for the first time. It has also been observed in Laos and Vietnam.

A case of duck disease with bird flu was reported at a poultry farm in the east of the English county of Yorkshire, said BBC on November 17. This was the first case of bird flu reported in Britain over the past six years.

Doctors say that this flu is not as dangerous for human as H5N1.

So far there is no case of human death. However, the FAO warns of the dangers which the disease may cause for livestock and the economy of the region.
