Azerbaijani universities entered World Rankings

08 February 2014 [13:05] - TODAY.AZ
In recent years, several Azerbaijani universities have begun to be earn places in the world-wide rating tables of reputable organizations working the field of ranking universities. However, online and printed news reports given in the mass media about these ratings have been incomplete and inaccurate at best.

One of the well-known organizations which ranks world universities is QS. The QS rating compares universities according to factors such as their reputation around the world, graduate employment rates, international partnerships, faculty-student ratio, academic publications, and percentages of international students and faculty. In the most recent QS World Rating for 2013-2014, only 3 Azerbaijani universities were listed. Khazar University and Qafqaz University took places in the 651-700 tier of world universities. Besides these two universities, a third Azerbaijani university—Baku State University—was ranked a bit lower, in the “701+” tier (meaning it fell somewhere below 700th place).

These ratings are carried out by specialized global organizations. They research the quality of education processes and determine the levels of world institutions based on extremely varied and significant factors.

Aside from international ratings, the Azerbaijani State Students Admission Commission (SSAC) has begun to publish its own rating tables in recent years. However, the SSAC rating is simply based on the admission campaign of the previous year. It is a listing according to admission examination results, but not a comprehensive rating reflecting universities’ multifaceted activities. The education that a student receives in the university where he or she studies should be viewed as more significant than his or her admission examination score. A student who scored lower on the exam but receives a good-quality education makes a stronger graduate than one with a high exam score who received a poor-quality education. The ratings of universities should be based on factors that reflect the comprehensive activities carried out by the universities, not just on the admission scores of students.
