The number of marriages in Turkey decreased in 2010 by 1.53 percent to 582,000, while the number of divorces increased by 3.8 percent to 118,568 over the previous year.
According to the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat), 40 percent of divorces occur in the first five years of marriage, and İstanbul is the province where most divorces are reported. In 2010, the Aegean region had the highest increase in its divorce rate, 2.33 percent, when compared to the previous year.
The highest average age for a first marriage was in the İstanbul region: 27.4 years for men and 24.3 years for females, while the lowest average age for a first marriage was in Central Anatolia, 25.3 years for men and 21.8 years for females.
According to TurkStat, the average first marriage age for men is 26.5 and 23.2 for women. The average age difference between men and women was 3.3 years.
