Turkish foreign minister says "post-World War II structure not sufficient for the world anymore"

Turkey's foreign minister said on Monday that a new United Nations (UN) mission had to be activated as the post-World War II structure did not meet global needs anymore, Anadolu News Agency reported.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu attended a working luncheon held within the scope of the 25th conference of the Confederation of Asia Pacific Chambers of Commerce and Industry hosted by the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) at Istanbul's Ciragan Palace.

Speaking at the gathering, Davutoglu said Turkey should both carry on with its EU membership perspective and display a strong presence in Asia, if it desired to play a major role in the world in the upcoming period.

Davutoglu also noted that the world currently needed a political reform process.

"The structure that has arisen after the World War II, particularly the United Nations, cannot meet the needs of the world anymore," he said.

"We need a new understanding for the UN. We have to activate a UN mission that represents the whole world, not the winners of the World War II only," the minister added.

Davutoglu also said economy was no longer administered by certain centers and economic organizations such as the International Monetary Fund and World Bank needed restructuring as well.

"This means we need a new economic order. G-20 is a prevailing structure in that aspect nowadays. As a G-20 member, Turkey is eager to act as the pioneering force behind this new economic order," he said.

Describing Turkey as one of the rising powers in the world, Davutoglu said developed countries and established economic centers such as the European Union (EU) and the United States should not ignore the least developed countries.

"Otherwise, peace cannot be established. We have to find answers to the needs of the 49 least developed countries," he said.

Davutoglu noted that the Asia-Pacific region could make major political and economic contributions to the world.

Expressing Turkey's will to become an EU member, Davutoglu said, "We will carry out important moves in Asia as well".

"We are aware of the fact that the only strategic tie needed for the re-establishment of the economic and historical relations between the EU and Eastern Asia can be maintained through Turkey. We hope our European friends will perceive such fact one day," the minister said.

Davutoglu also said that Europe tried to build a "visa wall" against Turkey.

"Those who try to build walls in today's moving world will lose eventually. If EU tries to build a visa wall in Turkey's northwest, it will definitely be the party that loses power and prestige," he noted.
