EU, Turkmenistan to intensify energy cooperation

Turkmenistan and the EU discussed the activation of energy cooperation, regional security, as well as the development of transport and transit routes connecting the region of Central Asia with European countries, Radio Azatlyk reported.

The official delegation of Turkmenistan headed by Foreign Minister Reshid Meredov visited Brussels on October 11-12 and met with the leadership of the EU and the European Commission.

This was the first visit of Resid Meredov to Brussels in the last 5 years.

During the meeting, further aspects of cooperation and partnership between the European Union and Turkmenistan, as well as regional security issues were discussed.

Official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan states, on 12 October, in the first half of the day, a meeting of the delegation of Turkmenistan with the Vice-President of the European Commission for Energy Union Maros  Sefcovic was held, during which issues of enhancing cooperation of Turkmenistan with the European Union in the energy sector were discussed.

Since 2011, the EU and Turkmenistan have been negotiating the construction of the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline to export Turkmen gas to Europe, as a result of the construction of a gas pipeline under the Caspian Sea, Turkmenistan will be able to export 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas to European consumers.

Turkmenistan has repeatedly declared interest in exporting natural gas to Europe.
