Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan view the developing of transportation links between Central Asian nations as a top priority.

During the visit of Kyrgyz President Sooronbai Jeenbekov to Uzbekistan on December 13, the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway came to the forefront as the most important infrastructure project that promises a lot for the future of Central Asia.

Working groups of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan will meet on December 25 to discuss the construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway, the press service of the Kyrgyz president said in a statement.

President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbai Jeenbekov said that the countries will work together on the construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway which will enhance the attractiveness and open the transit potential of Central Asia.

Also, there are plans for the development of road transport and regular passenger routes.

“In terms of the railway construction project, the working groups of the two countries will meet on December 25 this year. Already today we see the beginning of the practical implementation of the agreements on the establishment of joint ventures and production lines,” Jeenbekov said.

The main result of our talks was the unanimity of opinions on the need for further development and strengthening of Kyrgyz-Uzbek relations based on good-neighborliness and traditional friendship, he stressed.

The Kyrgyz head of state noted that a wide range of issues on the key spectrum of cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan was discussed and stated that on many issues the positions of the two states coincide.

“If earlier we were friendly countries, now we have become strategic partners,” Jeenbekov added.

The China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railroad would traverse and tunnel from China’s far western rail terminus at Kashi (Kashgar) to the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border town and trade hub at Kara-Suu, 20 kilometers north of Osh. The new line would then connect with Fergana Valley’s existing railroad network, which links the region’s major cities and the GM Uzbekistan plant in Asaka.

Kyrgyzstan is expected to profit greatly from inter-regional transit trade. The China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway network could possibly also be integrated into the China’s Belt and Road initiative via connections to ports in Pakistan and Iran.
