Austria eyes new projects in Turkmenistan

Business circles of Austria are interested in intensifying cooperation with Turkmenistan and implementation of joint projects, said Heidemaria Gurer, the head of the department of Eastern Europe, Western Balkan, South Caucasus and Central Asia at Austria's Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs.

She made the remark during a meeting held in Ashgabat, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry reported on June 14.

The diplomat also underlined the need to give an impetus to a more dynamic development of the relations between two countries, the search for new opportunities and areas of cooperation, in particular, small and medium-sized businesses.

It was previously reported that Austria is interested in purchasing of the Turkmen textile products. In Turkmenistan, this industry is evolving on the basis of the growth of domestic processing of cultivated cotton.

Austria is also interested in partnership in the sphere of processing of agricultural and food products. The possibilities of participating in the projects for the construction of livestock breeding complexes in Turkmenistan, supplying equipments for the production of meat and dairy products are under consideration.

Additionally, construction, health and tourism are among the priority areas for the cooperation. The two countries periodically hold business forums.

Several Austrian companies such as WOMA GmbH, Schoeller Bleckmann AG, Unger Stahlbau GmbH, Schrack Seconet AG, Oswelt GmbH, AME Interhational, Landhof, Schlafhorst, Truetzschler, Uster and Strabag SE show interest in the Turkmen market.

Turkmenistan is one of the most promising countries for Austria in the field of energy security, and the possibility to diversify the sources of raw materials' supply.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1992. Austria also assisted developing the UN resolution on Turkmenistan's neutrality.

In 2014, bilateral trade turnover between the two countries increased by over 20 per cent as compared with 2013.
