UN chief condemns killing of five peacekeepers in Mali

30 May 2016 [11:45] - TODAY.AZ

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned an attack in Mali's central region of Mopti, which had killed five UN peacekeepers, Sputik reported.

On Sunday, five UN peacekeepers were killed in a deadly attack against the convoy of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).

"The Secretary-General condemns the deadly attack that took place today in the Mopti region, in Mali, against a convoy of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA)," the UN said in a Sunday statement.

Ban reiterated UN's support in the stabilization of the situation in Mali and the implementation of the peace agreement. He expresses support to the Malian authorities in their fight against extremist groups, according to the statement.

Mali has been in turmoil since a 2012 military coup that saw separatist Tuareg tribes seize control over large areas in the northern part of the country. Islamist groups that emerged in Mali in the last decade have recently staged several terrorist attacks in the country.
The UN Mission has been present in the African country since 2013.
