Greece has voiced readiness to open direct flights between Athens and Iran’s capital city Tehran.

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias made the remark in a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, IRNA news agency reported.

This came as Iran is taking steps to expand its relations with the European countries.

Earlier, several European airliners voiced intention to offer new flights to Iran amid a growing demand as a result of the business and tourist boom in that country. The companies are receiving clear signals of a revival in economic relations between Europe and Iran from the business community and political decision-makers.

Kotzias visited Iran to discuss the issues of strengthening economic relations and the preparation for the visit of Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

Greece was a key European importer of the Iranian oil before Western sanctions on Tehran brought the oil sales to a halt in 2012.

Athens has an outstanding debt owed to Tehran for oil purchases, according to Iranian officials who have not named the figures.

The Greek foreign minister’s visit to Tehran will take place against the backdrop of a nuclear agreement reached between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries.

Iran and the P5+1 group of countries – the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia plus Germany – reached on July 14 the nuclear agreement, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in the Austrian capital Vienna.

Under the JCPOA, limits will be put on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for, among other things, the removal of all economic and financial bans against the Islamic Republic related to its nuclear program.
