23 November 2015 [19:12] - TODAY.AZ

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov is taking part as guest of honor in the summit of Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), which began its work in Tehran Nov.23.

The participation of the Turkmen leader in the GECF summit was discussed during the last meeting of the Turkmen government.

During the meeting, Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov said that Turkmenistan, as a global energy power, is one of the largest exporters of gas.

Speaking for the development of mutually beneficial international cooperation in the strategic energy sector, Turkmenistan put forward a number of important initiatives in this area, which received the full support of the United Nations.

At the cabinet meeting, the Turkmen leader said that taking an active stance in the issue of energy security of the region, Turkmenistan also initiated large-scale infrastructure energy projects, including the construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline.

“Practical realization of this project will contribute to strengthening peace and stability, good-neighborly and friendly relations in the region, solving pressing social and economic issues, and will effectively contribute to the formation of a modern architecture of global energy security and the achievement of global sustainable development,” noted Berdimuhamedov.

Turkmenistan ranks fourth in the world in terms of natural gas reserves after Russia, Iran and Qatar.

The country’s largest resources are concentrated in the eastern region of Mary – in Galkynysh and Yashlar deposits, which according to local geologists and Britain’s GCA, have a total reserve of up to 26.2 trillion cubic meters of gas.

According to a BP report on world energy, Turkmenistan produced 69.3 billion cubic meters of gas in 2014, compared to 62.3 billion cubic meters of gas in 2013.

At this stage, the Turkmen gas consumers are China, Iran and Russia.

It should be noted that increasing demand is inherent for the Chinese market.

Turkmenistan plans to bring the volume of gas production to 230 billion cubic meters by 2030 and to export 180 billion cubic meters of this volume.

The country’s participation in such events as the summit of Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) shows that the country’s important role in this sphere is recognized.

The primary goals of GECF include exchange of experience, opinions and information on key aspects of developing the gas industry.

Given the potential and intentions of Turkmenistan in gas sphere, the country can make a significant contribution to fulfilling the forum’s tasks.

The country has repeatedly expressed support to creating stable systems of international energy supply, working out effective schemes and models for cooperation on global energy markets.
