Iranian ‘sanctions middlemen’ made $30B a year

05 August 2015 [16:27] - TODAY.AZ

An Iranian business sector director said people dubbed in the country as “sanctions businessmen” have been making $30 billion annually during the past few years.

The term ‘sanctions businessmen’ in Iran refers to middlemen who found economic sanctions on Iran as a ripe situation to make money.

These were usually middlemen who facilitated economic transactions while official Iranian entities could not do international business under the sanctions.

However, there has been a rising criticism directed at these people by officials and the public accusing them of trying to defuse Iran’s diplomatic efforts to remove the sanctions for personal gain.

Under the sanctions, these businessmen made 25 to 30 billion dollars a year for the goods they imported into the country, Ali Fazeli, chairman of Iran’s Chamber of Guilds said, Ta’adol newspaper reported August 5.

Preventing this loss will be one of the least gains Iran will achieve from the nuclear deal, he said.

The sanctions are to be removed according to a comprehensive deal between Iran and world powers that was made July 14.
