A delegation of Turkmenistan, led by that country’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Rashid Meredov was recently in Tehran on a working visit, said the Turkmen government July 30.

During the visit, a meeting was held with Iran’s roads and urban development minister, Abbas Ahmad Akhoundi, who co-chairs the Iranian part of the joint intergovernmental Turkmen-Iranian trade and economic cooperation commission.

Turkmenistan’s delegation also took part in the 14th session of the joint commission.

The forum’s agenda included a wide range of issues covering various areas of bilateral cooperation.

The trade-economic and transportation-communications sectors, agriculture, water management, customs issues, cooperation between the two countries’ regions, communications, and information technologies were set as the main issues in the agenda.

Following the meeting, the sides signed a final protocol. Moreover, they signed a protocol on constructing a new road bridge on Serakhs-Sarakhs (Turkmenistan-Iran) checkpoint.

Turkmenistan’s delegation also held a meeting with Iran's Minister of Petroleum Bijan Namdar Zanganeh, said the message.

“During the meeting, the sides exchanged views on the current state and prospects for relations between the two countries and considered the possibility of expanding bilateral cooperation in the energy sector,” said the message.

Moreover, Turkmenistan’s Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov met with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif and Minister of Industry, Mining, and Trade Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh.

It was earlier reported that the annual volume of Turkmenistan-Iran bilateral trade hits $5 billion and it can double in the coming years, the Iranian side said.

During the years of the long-term cooperation, Turkmenistan and Iran implemented a number of large-scale joint projects. The most important are the Korpeje-Kurt-Kui gas pipeline, commissioned in 1996 and the recently launched branch - via another transit Dovletabat-Sarakhs-Hangeran. Iran also buys electric power in Turkmenistan.

The two countries built a border dam, called Dostluk (Friendship), and realized the ‘North-South’ railway project, on the basis of a tripartite agreement signed in 2007 with participation of Turkmenistan, Iran and Kazakhstan.
