EU foreign policy chief visit to Tehran focuses on trade

28 July 2015 [12:34] - TODAY.AZ

The upcoming visits of European Union's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, and French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, to Tehran will focus on boosting trade relations with Iran, said Majid Takht Ravanchi, Iranian deputy foreign minister and member of the nuclear negotiation team.

“Collaboration with European countries, as trading partners, is of importance to us. We are interested in collaborating with European countries in line with foreign trade policies of the Islamic Republic,” Iran’s ISNA news agency quoted Takht Ravanchi as saying July 28.

Mogherini and Fabius will arrive in Iran on July 28 and July 29, respectively. The visits come two weeks after the nuclear deal between Iran and the P5+1 (US, Russia, China, France, UK , and Germany) was concluded in Vienna.

Takht Ravanchi said that sanctions against Iran had hindered the country’s foreign trade. “Once the sanctions are lifted, the way will be paved for boosting trade with Europe more than the past. The visits of Mogherini and Fabius to Tehran will be in this line.”

“We will discuss different issues as well, including fighting against terrorism, extremism, and narcotics during the meetings,” Takht Ravanchi noted.

Mogherini is expected to hold talks in Tehran with her Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif and other senior officials of the country.
