Iran nuke deal is geo-strategic tsunami, French senator says

16 July 2015 [14:18] - TODAY.AZ

The nuclear deal which was signed between Iran and the six world powers is a diplomatic, economic and geo-strategic tsunami, Nathalie Goulet, a member of the French Senate told Trend July 16.

She also said that it is a victory for diplomacy and the result of US President Barack Obama and his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rouhani’s strong political will.

“There have been years of defiance against the former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who eventually ruined Iran's reputation and now president Rouhani has returned it.”

Iran and the P5+1 (US, Russia, China, France, UK, and Germany) reached a comprehensive nuclear agreement on July 14, after several months of talks, curbing Iran 's nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of most international sanctions.

The French senator believes that the agreement is very clear and guarantees that there will be no nuclear weapons in Iran.

“I am very confident on that point. There is a ban on the sale and purchase of weapons, and a complete blockage on the nuclear as well,” she said.

She said the agreement will completely rethink the map of power in the Middle East and those who were part of the problem will be part of the solutions.

She also refused the hypothesis that economic issues facilitated the nuclear agreement, saying the issues are distinct.

“The nuclear issue is detachable. That's why we never mixed the issue of Iran’s taking part in fight against the IS (Islamic State) group in the negotiations and did not link that to nuclear talks.”

However the French senator believes that the agreement itself will pave the way for more cooperation between the sides.

“Thanks to the agreement, this will facilitate relations. The sanctions will be lifted and the financial circuits will be restored. But the nuclear deal was limited to nuclear issue, neither economic relations, nor the issue of the fight against the IS.”
