Iran prioritizes security of eastern provinces

12 May 2015 [17:34] - TODAY.AZ

Iran has placed the highest priority on the security of Sistan-Baluchestan, Kerman, South Khorasan, and Yazd eastern provinces in the current Iranian fiscal year, which began on March 21, Iran’s interior minister Abdorreza Rahmani- Fazli said.

He added that law enforcement, the IRGC, the judiciary system, the Interior Ministry, and the Intelligence Ministry will follow up the policy to deal with smuggling of human and drugs, as well as preventing contraband, Iran’s IRNA news agency reported May 12.

Referring to the presence of hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals in Iran, mainly Afghans, he said: “Based on Islamic and humanitarian principles, we have to receive a large number of migrant Afghans due to unstable economic and security situations in Afghanistan.”

He noted that some 2.5 million Afghans are currently living in Iran, of them around one million have received certificates to live and work in Iran.

Some 500,000 Afghans were sent back to their country in the past Iranian fiscal year, he added.

“Unfortunately, due to inability of the governments of Afghanistan and Pakistan to control their border areas, the migration of Afghans to Iran continued. We should come to terms with them to boost control over border areas,” Rahmani-Fazli said.
