Flashy political collision of the rulers and opposition forces in Armenia is widening as new players are involved.

President Serzh Sarsgyan's recent attack on opposition leader Gagik Tsarukyan, calling him an "evil", surprised country's former President Robert Kocharyan.

In an interview with 2rd.am, a local media outlet, Kocharyan revealed his frustration with the president's public slander against Tsarukyan.

He said Sargsyan has failed to undermine the position of the leader of Prosperous Armenia Party, as his attempt was immediately backfired.

"The opposition forces are seemingly uniting in Armenia. Any move against Tsarukyan will now be seen as an unjustified political witch-hunt,” Kocharyan noted.

Further attempts by the current government to cleanse the political field, Kocharyan said, will only increase the unity against the regime and prospects for civic upheavals amid the social tension in Armenia and the widespread support to Tsarukyan and his party.

Kocharyan predicted a serious impact of all of developments on the country's economy, on the situation along the contact line, and on the realization of upcoming events commemorating the so-called "genocide."

He called on the regime to avoid any administrative moves against Tsarukyan and to remain within the limits of verbal debate.

"The plans voiced by the rulers at the council session of the Republican Party are against Armenia’s constitution," Kocharyan said.

He went on to blame the authorities for deliberately pushing the opposition forces to organize mass street actions, consequences of which cannot be foreseen.

"Our country is already overloaded with serious problems and their solution is possible only through consolidation of society, based on the restoration of people’s trust in future of the country," Kocharyan believed.

Arrests and repressive measures by the regime will lead Armenia into a deep and long-term crisis, he added.

There is a fresh Sargsyan-Tsarukyan confrontation started in Armenia not long ago. Opposition leader Tsarukyan's recent warning about the massive anti-government rallies resulted in his deprivation of a mandate at the state body. Sargsyan has reportedly launched a large-scale attack on the opposition foregoer to kick him out of the politics. Kocharyan's involvement in the scandal is explained with his desire to overthrow Sargsyan.
