Iranian government rejects wiretapping critic MPs

12 January 2015 [16:04] - TODAY.AZ

Wiretapping critics is against the religious and moral principles, Hesameddin Ashena, an advisor to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on cultural affairs said.

Ashena also seriously dismissed claims that say Rouhani’s government is wiretapping critic lawmakers, Iran’s Vatanemrooz newspaper reported Jan. 12.

The newspaper quoted the conservative Iranian MP Nasrollah Pejmanfar as saying that the government illegally is eavesdropping its critics including MPs and political figures.

Rouhani’s government has recently presented a bill to parliament to end unlawful intelligence gathering on members of the public.

The bill says that real or any legal entity that purposely and without permission from the Intelligence Ministry tries to produce, distribute or advertise any equipment used for data mining and intelligence gathering, including audio and video data, will be subjected to punishments enshrined in the Penal Code.

It should be recalled that, Iranian MP Ali Motahari who is a critic of ex-president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, said in 2013 that he had discovered eavesdropping devices installed in his office.

Motahari requested the Intelligence Ministry to explain the installation of the devices, which he said violated Iranian law, while some other conservative parliament members criticized Motahari for publicizing the issue.
