Iran is among the top 10 countries in terms of prison population, Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr deputy head of the Islamic Republic Judiciary said, ISNA news agency reported Dec. 28.

He said that the surveys indicate that the number of crimes occurring in Iran is alarming. Police reports suggest turmoil is the issue, he said adding that the increasing number of judiciary case records is also an indicator of unacceptable conditions.

Zolghadr added that preventing crimes is a necessity.

The number of prisoners in Iran stood at 217,851 in the last Iranian fiscal year, which ended on March 21, according to Mostafa Pourmohammadi, Iran’s justice minister.

About 9.8 million case records were submitted in Iran's judiciary last year, Pourmohammadi said, adding that 6.2 million cases out of this figure were sent to the courts and 3.6 million were directed to the dispute resolution councils.

Earlier Iranian Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani said that sentencing people convicted of less serious crimes to house arrest rather than prison is a good approach.

Larijani stated that the judiciary has begun using GPS electronic monitoring bracelets for some convicts under house arrest in Isfahan and Tehran.
