Iran and the six world powers will start new round of nuclear talks on Tehran’s nuclear energy program on December 17. It comes after they failed to reach final deal by a November 24 deadline.

Senior officials from Iran and the P5+1 group have resumed negotiations over Tehran's nuclear energy program in the Swiss city of Geneva.

Nuclear negotiators from Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council - Russia, China, France, Britain and the U.S., plus Germany held extensive meetings for the second consecutive day in Geneva on December 16.

Prior to the meeting of Iran and the P5+1 group, representatives from Iran and the U.S. discussed issues of mutual interest in the latest round of nuclear comprehensive negotiations.

Seyyed Abbas Araqchi, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs gave a positive assessment of the dominant atmosphere of the Geneva negotiations.

“We have had detailed discussions about all outstanding issues, especially sanctions, at the deputy and expert-level talks,” Araqchi said.

He added that “there are solutions to some of the issues and at some stages more discussions should be held and more efforts should be made.”

This round of the talks is the first one after the seven-month extension of the nuclear talks as Tehran and the six countries failed to reach a final agreement by deadline.

Despite making progress, Iran and the P5+1 group failed to clinch a final nuclear deal during their previous talks in the Austrian capital of Vienna.

However, the two sides agreed to extend their discussions for other seven months until July 1, 2015. They also agreed that the interim deal they had signed in Geneva last November remain in place during the negotiations.

The U.S. and EU imposed sanctions on Iran's oil and financial sectors at the beginning of 2012 due to claims of potential deviation toward non-civilian purposes in Iran's nuclear energy program. Iran has repeatedly denied the Western allegations against its nuclear energy program.

The sanctions prevent other countries from purchasing Iranian oil and conducting transactions with the Central Bank of Iran. At the end of 2012, the EU foreign ministers reached an agreement to impose another round of sanctions against Iran.
