Timoshenko arrives in Berlin to have medical treatment

08 March 2014 [11:13] - TODAY.AZ
Ukraine's former Prime Minister and Batkivshchina (Fatherland) party leader Yulia Timoshenko, who has recently been released from jail, arrived in Germany to undergo a course of medical treatment.

Her plane landed in Berlin's Schonefeld airport late on Friday. Upon landing, Timoshenko immediately headed for the Charite clinic, the DPA agency reported.

On Saturday, a news conference will be held at the clinic, whose doctors regularly examined the Ukrainian former prime minister in a hospital in Ukraine and insisted on an emergency surgery. German politicians repeatedly called on Kiev to let Timoshenko out of the country to undergo medical treatment.

A source in the Charite clinic told Itar-Tass that Timoshenko was not expected to attend the news conference. "Moreover, she plans to give no interviews over her stay in Berlin," the source said.

Under German law, medics have no right to disclose information about their patients without their consent for that. That is why, Charite doctors refrain from any comments about Timoshenko's health.

Timoshenko was released from prison on February 22 by the Ukrainian parliament. She had been sentenced to seven years in prison for having acted in excess of her powers when signing a gas contract with Russia at the time when she as prime minister.
