Four Al Jazeera journalist detained in Egypt

30 December 2013 [17:35] - TODAY.AZ
Four journalists working for the Doha-based Al Jazeera broadcaster have been arrested in Cairo, the broadcaster said Monday, dpa reported.

Correspondent Peter Greste, an Australian national, producers Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed, as well as cameraman Mohamed Fawzy have been held since Sunday evening, it added.

The Interior Ministry said it had arrested a member of the "Muslim Brotherhood terrorist group" and an Australian man for "holding meetings in a Cairo hotel and using it to broadcast false news that harms national security for the Qatari Al Jazeera channel without getting permission."

Security forces confiscated videos, cameras, as well as two editing and live broadcast units, the statement added.

Police raided Al Jazeera offices in Cairo after the army overthrew Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in July. Several staff members were arrested. The Doha-based network has been criticized by many observers for its pro-Morsi reporting.

Several Al Jazeera reporters have been in detention since August.

Egypt's military-backed government last week declared Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist group.
