Ivanishvili doesn't except Sochi visit

14 May 2013 [18:00] - TODAY.AZ
Prime Minister of Georgia Bidzina Ivanishvili does not rule out the possibility of visiting the Olympic Games in Sochi. "It is too early to speak about this, but nothing can be ruled out," Ivanishvili said at a meeting with media representatives.

"Seven months are left until the start of the Olympic Games in Sochi. I did not receive an invitation though it is not necessary to go to Sochi. Let's see how events will develop," Ivanishvili said.

At an extraordinary meeting, the National Olympic Committee of Georgia adopted the decision to participate at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.

Georgia and Russia do not have diplomatic relations. Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili previously spoke about the possibility of a boycott of Sochi Olympic Games.

Large scale military actions were launched in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.

Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi broke diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognised republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
