NATO reached targets in Afghanistan, but incompletely :expert

25 April 2013 [17:24] - TODAY.AZ
NATO has achieved its goals set within the scope of its operation in Afghanistan but only partially, experts believe.

"When looking narrowly, it can be said that the troops have been solving the tactical task of eliminating unfriendly areas. Therefore we can say that the task has been mainly solved. However I want to look at this more broadly. It is about ensuring stability in the Afghan society. This has not succeeded. Millions of Afghans were killed and there is a chain reaction that no one can predict," Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist Roy Gutman said.

According to Gutman, it would be perfect if when entering Afghanistan U.S. troops understood what they had to face and what they had inherited from the previous conquerors of this country. However, during the past 12 years, the U.S. goals were tactical.

According to the president of the American-Iranian Council (AIC) Hooshang Amirahmadi, Al-Qaeda today is not as strong as before, so the Americans have succeeded in reducing the threat.

He also expressed the view that today Afghanistan is ready to defend itself.

"The reason behind the strengthening of the Taliban movement is the fact that the occupation has continued too long and religious groups and in particular the Taliban have become a national and religious force claiming they are defending their country against invaders. If the troops leave, this aspect will disappear itself, " Amirahmadi said.

At the same time, according to the British television anchor-man of Al Jazeera international channel Stephen Cole, the question about the future of Afghanistan after the troop withdrawal remains open.

"After many years of the bloody conflict in Afghanistan, the U.S. must ensure a smooth exit from the conflict. According to Obama, the mission ends next year and American boys will return back home. He won applause in a manner characteristic of American presidents. As a journalist, I want to cover the negative aspects of the process," Cole said.

According to Russian political analyst Yuri Solozobov, the presence of NATO troops in Afghanistan has had many negative effects.

"Drug production has increased by 44 times and that is a phenomenal result. A channel of trafficking drugs to Europe has been established. Sadly, one third of them remain in Russia with our students consuming them," Solozobov said.

In addition according to him, the problem of refugees is acute in the region today as a result of the operation in Afghanistan.
