State Border Service chief: drug trafficking rises between Iran and Azerbaijan

18 August 2011 [12:51] - TODAY.AZ
The frequency of drug trafficking attempts between Iran and Azerbaijan has increased, Azerbaijani State Border Service Chief Elchin Guliyev said on Thursday.

"Despite the growth of such attempts, Azerbaijani border guards and other personnel successfully prevent the incidents from taking place", Guliyev said.
He said the Azerbaijani border guards also possess modern equipment used worldwide by state border guards.

"As a result, approximately 90 percent of illegal border crossing attempts have been prevented in recent years. This is a very serious indicator for combating international terrorism, illegal migration, and drug trafficking on a global scale", Guliyev said.

He added that the infrastructure for border protection in Azerbaijan has been equipped to the highest degree in recent years.
