Indonesia opens embassy in Azerbaijan

The Indonesian Foreign Ministry opened eleven diplomatic missions around the world to strengthen bilateral ties and enhance economic potential, Xinhua reported.

Indonesia will accredit permanent representative to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Jakarta. The country will also open an embassy in Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Oman, Mozambique, Panama, Ecuador, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and the consulate in Malaysia.

The opening of diplomatic missions is expected to strengthen bilateral ties with the listed countries and organizations in various areas, including the provision of services and legal protection for Indonesian migrant workers abroad, Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said.

The total number of the Indonesian diplomatic missions reached 130 with the opening of the 11 news ones. Natalegawa said the opening of the Indonesian mission in the Caucasus and Central Asia - Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan - a very important step, since both countries are rich in energy resources.

"This may help in achieving energy security," Natalegawa said.

The Azerbaijani Embassy in Indonesia was opened in 2005.

Natalegawa also told reporters that in the future, Indonesia plans to open diplomatic missions in 21 countries. The country intends expand cooperation and strengthen ties with countries around the world, except Israel, as Indonesia supports independence of Palestine.
