Iranian FM: Summit of Caspian states to be held in Baku assumes great importance in terms of cooperation

The summit of Caspian states, which will be held in Baku, assumes great importance in terms of cooperation, said Foreign Minister of Iran Manouchehr Mottaki, answering the question by Trend  correspondent during a press conference in Tehran.

"Iran will attend the summit at a high level. A meeting at the level of foreign ministries will be held the day before the summit in Baku," said Mottaki.

According to minister, the purpose of the summit is to strengthen the integration between the countries.

"I hope that the positions on issues of safety, environment, economy and other spheres will become even closer. We have great hopes for the results of this summit," said Mottaki.

In November 2003, the Caspian countries signed the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea.

In July 1998, Russia and Kazakhstan signed an agreement on the delimitation of the northern part of the Caspian Sea in order to exercise sovereign rights for subsoil use. On Nov. 29, 2001 and Feb.27, 2003, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan signed an agreement on the delimitation of the Caspian Sea.

Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Russia signed an agreement on the delimitation of adjacent sections of the Caspian Sea on May 14, 2003.
