Azerbaijani political expert: Azerbaijan has got a great chance to lobby for its interests in United States

10 June 2010 [12:35] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijani political expert Rasim Agayev says "it is early to say that Washington has shifted its position towards the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict."
“There are numerous politicians and geopolitical research centers in the United States that have different standpoints and understanding of what policies Washington should pursue in our region. But, as I understand it, during his last visit to Azerbaijan, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates made no statements which allow to argue that the White House has indeed changed its position on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, key issue for Azerbaijan. In this issue, I probably disagree with other political experts who say that Washington's position towards our country has changed," the expert said.

Agayev says, that same as before, Washington believes that opening the Armenian-Turkish border and the Karabakh conflict settlement should be viewed in isolation from each other in support to Moscow. “The only thing the United States has agreed to do is that it has promised to revise the Karabakh issue because American leaders realized how loberation of occupied territories is important for Azerbaijan.”

The political analyst, avoiding exaggeration of the place the Karabakh conflict occupies in the U.S. foreign policy, noted that Washington needs Armenian-Turkish rapprochement, as well as other initiatives by the United States in this region to open a broad communicative transport routes from Baghdad, and to keep Iran from unbalanced action in the region and, in particular, against Israel.

“Our interests fail to coincide with those of the United States in this issue which became known during U.S. Defense Secretary's visit to Baku. Baku has also made it clear that it will not take any anti-Iran steps and reiterated that its objection to view Armenia-Turkey rapprochement in isolation from the Karabakh conflict resolution thus treading on the U.S. corns,” the expert explained.

Considering all the above, I believe Baku has got a great chance to lobby for its interests in the States. If we make use of Washington’s interests properly, Azerbaijan will get a chance for a real benefit,” Agayev added.
