"April 25 syndrome" exists for every Armenian

30 April 2010 [13:26] - TODAY.AZ
Interview with Azerbaijani conflict science expert Azad Isazade.
This year, the U.S. president disappointed Armenians around the world once by not referring 1915 events in the Ottoman Empire as "genocide." Can we say that the frustrations of Armenians’ hopes have given a rise to the "syndrome of April 25"?

April 25 has become a day of disappointments for Armenians worldwide. It is possible to say "syndrome April 25" exists for every individual of Armenian origin because expectations that the U.S. president will name the events of 1915 in the Ottoman Empire "Armenian genocide" are not met each year. Moreover, such a trend has already led to the fact that some Armenian political scientists have started to realize that in the coming years, U.S. Presidents, whoever holds this post, will not utter the phrase "Armenian genocide" referring to events in the Ottoman Empire.

Canwe assume, that over the years, a growing number of people in Armenia will understand that one can not build his/her future on the psychology of the victim?

To give a precise answer to this question, you need to conduct large sociological survey. I can only say that every year at various international conferences, I meet more and more Armenians who more realistically assess the possibility of U.S. recognition of the so-called "genocide."

This trend can be explained by the fact that during the Soviet period recognition of the "Armenian genocide" was a national idea for average citizen of Armenia and they dreamed about it due to more stable socio-economic situation while today the lives of ordinary Armenian citizens can be characterized as the daily struggle for survival and a growing number of people understand how wrong they are, having a policy based on psychology of a victim.

Then why parliaments of various countries do not stop efforts to recognize the mythical "Armenian genocide?

This is due to ethno-psychological features of the Armenians, who cannot give up the myths and ideas that have been handed to them from generation to generation. The tendency I mentioned above does exist. But I am still convinced that for very long time the world Armenians will seek recognition of the "Armenian genocide" by the U.S. President and the parliaments of various countries.

In particular, any future Armenian president will be forced to pursue the same line, while trying to solve the existing economic problems which are due to the policy of isolation in which Armenia wounded up because of territorial and historical claims to the neighboring states.

Speaking of the existing economic problems in Armenia... As someone who has repeatedly visited this country, can you tell me how big is the gap between living standards in Azerbaijan and those in Armenia?

To answer this question, I need to conduct accurate and substantiated study. I can only speak about what I saw during a visit Armenia in various years. In my opinion, the gap in living standards between Azerbaijan and Armenia is growing with every year.

Why, in this case, why Yerevan does not change its policy towards settlement of Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict? It is known that without a solution to this problem, it is simply impossible to hope for Armenia's way out from the current difficult situation.

The answer to this question is very simple. Armenia's policy in the settlement of Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict remains unchanged, because the leadership of this country, to put it mildly, does not feel the economic hardships faced by ordinary citizens. The leadership does not need to sleep and wake up with the idea of how to earn their daily lives.

In addition, the Armenian leadership is hoping that they will be able to open the Turkish-Armenian border, whereby they would have solved a number of economic challenges facing the country in isolation of the settlement of Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict ... As you can see, this did not happen. Ordinary citizens of this country felt consequences of geopolitical setbacks Armenia first of all.
