Azerbaijani, Turkish diasporas in California support a rival of Paul Krikorian

20 October 2009 [10:09] - TODAY.AZ
On Oct. 17, representatives of the Azerbaijani and Turkish diasporas in California under the auspices of the initiative Pax Turcica held a fund-raising event in support of a candidate for city council of Los Angeles Christine Essel.
Mrs. Essel, former Vice President of Paramount Pictures, has over 30-year experience with the public in Los Angeles.

Rival to Mrs. Essel in the elections due on Dec. 8 is a member of the California Assembly (state legislature) Paul Krikorian. In March 2009, Paul Krikorian, organized a protest campaign in the California Assembly against the letter addressed by lawmaker Felipe Fuentes to President of Azerbaijan, in which Mr. Fuentes remembered victims of the Khojaly genocide.

In a letter to members of the Assembly, Krikorian insulted the victims of Khojaly genocide, repeating an immoral Armenian thesis that Khojaly is an invention of the Azerbaijani side and Azerbaijanis allegedly shot themselves. In April 2009 the same year, Paul Krikorian became the author of the failed legislation AB 961, trying to ban California companies with business ties in Turkey to participate in government contracts.

Speaking at an event organized at the residence of Mehmet and Demeter Mustafoglu, Mrs. Hessel talked about their experiences with the public and thanked the representatives of the Azerbaijani and Turkish communities for their support in the election campaign.

Speaking at the event, the initiator of the group Pax Turcica Javid Huseynov noted a need to support Christine Essel, because unlike her opponent, she does not put personal ethnic interests above the interests of the community and the everyday problems of Los Angeles.

President of the Azerbaijani-American Council Ismail Rustamov also attended the event.
