National Assembly of Georgian Azerbaijanis not wishing country's NATO accession

13 November 2008 [17:55] - TODAY.AZ
The National Assembly of Georgian Azerbaijan is completely against the country's NATO accession, said assembly president Dashgin Gulmamedov.
He said if Georgian powers do not reject intention to join NATO, this will become a disaster for Georgia.

"Hardly could Georgia state the intention to join this military bloc that it lost Abkhazia and South Ossetia", noted he.

He considers that Georgia must declare its military and political neutrality and this is the only perspective way of its development and the only way out of the established hard situation.

The assembly is against dislocation of any military bases - either American, Turkish, NATO or Russian - in Georgia.

The Georgian authorities must hold pro-Georgian, not pro-American policy.

"Turkey, Azerbaijan and Russia are primarily important for Georgia today, while the economic cooperation with the European Union is on the second place. We support Georgia's EU accession. Today's pro-Аmerican external policy of Georgia is a threat to its statehood. The United States and some western countries use Georgia as a base for anti-Russian policy", noted he.

According to the assembly both Georgia and its people suffer from it.

The assembly is for improvement and strengthening of relations with Russia and this should not be delayed.

Gulmamedov noted: "Washington regards Georgia as an object of sacrifice. West does not intend to accept Georgia in NATO. Merely, they try to intimidate Russia with this perspective. In fact, the United States treat Georgian citizens as the third category people. We can not get visa to the United States normally. Though the United States call Georgia a strategic partner, this is not seen, in fact.

"Where was this "partner" when Russian troops invaded Georgia? US "friends" contented themselves with watching along with senseless promises and several raids," added Gulmamedov.
