The Institute of Open Society (Soros Fund) decided not to finance projects for monitoring and control over elections of president of Azerbaijan in 2008.

The due announcement was made by chief executive of the Institute Farda Asadov, Novosti-Azerbaijan reports.

He said the decision was adopted by the management of the Institute and supported by Fund's founder Georgia Soros.

Asadov stressed the necessity to share Institute's activity is supporting the civil society, which includes active participation of citizens and Institute's participation in the Election process. The latter requires special experience, skills and knowledge, personnel, which Soros fund does not have.

Asadov considers that special organizations, such as OSCE and the US National Institute of Democracy should participate in the elections.

The decision was caused by the fact that Institute's participation in the control over the previous election campaigns in Azerbaijan did not bring the desired results. "At the same time the fund took into accounts the experience of Fund's Iranian partners, who were arrested for cooperation with the Soros Fund", Asadov added.
