The November 1 parliamentary election in Azerbaijan has once again reaffirmed the country's commitment to democratic values.

This was stated by President Ilham Aliyev at the first session of Azerbaijan's newly-elect parliament of the fifth convocation on November 24.

“The parliamentary elections fully reflected the will of the Azerbaijani people. The elections were transparent, fair, and were held in an atmosphere of tough competition,” he said.

President Aliyev noted that more than 500 international and tens of thousands of local observers monitored the elections.

“The general opinion was that the elections met the highest international standards. The people of Azerbaijan freely expressed their will in these elections. I would like to note the opinions of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, CIS and other international organizations. Polls conducted by international organizations confirmed the results of the elections,” he added.

The head of state described the elections as Azerbaijan's “another successful step” on the path of democracy.

President Aliyev went on to add that Azerbaijan's recent achievements are praised not only within the country, but also abroad.

"The international reputation of our country is rising, Azerbaijan is known as a reliable partner. The number of our friends increases, a growing number of countries want to cooperate with us,” President Aliyev said.

He stressed that Azerbaijan has been the fastest growing country in the world over the recent years in terms of economic development.

“Today all major financial and economic organizations confirm these realities and set Azerbaijan as an example for other countries. This is indeed our great achievement. Fast economic development is reflected in the life of the people. Our successful economic reforms are completed with the strong social policy. As a result of this policy our country has made great strides in the reduction of poverty and unemployment over the recent years. Today the rate of both poverty and unemployment is 5 percent and it is one of the best indicators in the world,” President Aliyev added.

The Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan approved the results of the November 1 parliamentary election on November 24.

The newly-elect Azerbaijani Parliament of the fifth convocation held its first meeting on the same day, where Ogtay Asadov was re-elected the chairman of the parliament, Ziyafat Asgarov - the first deputy chairman, and Bahar Muradova and Valeh Alasgarov - deputy chairmen of the parliament.

The Parliament of the fifth convocation includes representatives of 10 political parties. These are 69 members of the New Azerbaijan Party, two members of the Civil Unity Party, while 8 political parties won one parliamentary seat each. The rest 44 people received mandates as independent MPs.

The voter turnout in the parliamentary election was 55.7 percent. Over 2.89 million voters participated in the election, which is 6 percent more than in the previous elections.
