02 October 2013 [17:30] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijani Defence Minister, Colonel General Safar Abiyev held a meeting with the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Greece to Azerbaijan Dimitrios Tsoungas, according to a message from the press-service of the Defence Ministry published on Wednesday.

According to the message, during the meeting, Abiyev emphasized the importance of the development of Azerbaijani-Greece relations.

During the meeting, Ambassador Tsoungas said that he will make every effort to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in all areas.

According to Safar Abiyev, international organizations, leading European countries and the OSCE Minsk Group should intensify their activity on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict through negotiations, otherwise, unwanted and serious problems may emerge in the region.

Recalling that the war is not still over, Abiyev stressed that Armenia should withdraw from the occupied Azerbaijani territories.

"If Armenia doesn't put its aggressive policy down soon, the Azerbaijani army will liberate the occupied Azerbaijani territories"

There were also exchanges of views on other issues during the meeting.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
