One more presidential hopeful passes registration in Azerbaijan

At Tuesday's meeting of Azerbaijani Central Election Commission (CEC), the chairman of Umid Party, Igbal Agazade was officially registered as presidential candidate.

According to CEC secretary Arifa Mukhtarova, the plenipotentiary representatives of the party submitted Agazade's documents to CEC.

"These documents were checked by CEC; relevant conclusions and final protocol were adopted on their basis," Mukhtarova said.

It was noted at the meeting that about 43950 signatures were collected from 102 constituencies for supporting Igbal Agazade's candidacy, 3798 of which were proved invalid.

During the meeting, CEC head Mazahir Panahov noted that the candidate Zahid Oruj has also submitted his signatures to CEC.

"The verification of these signatures will begin from September 4," he noted.

Panahov noted that CEC received applications from over 2500 observers, around 1296 of which will observe the elections around the country and 1221 - in constituencies.

CEC head called on the voters to check their names in the voters list.

To date, only the chairman of New Azerbaijan party, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was registered as presidential candidate.

Azerbaijani citizens who have the voting right (active or passive), initiative group of voters, political parties, blocks of political parties have the right to nominate the candidacy for participation in the presidential elections.

Presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held on October 9. Previous presidential elections were held on October 15, 2008.

Presidential elections in Azerbaijan are held every five years.
