Colombia upholds Azerbaijan's position in Karabakh conflcit

Colombia supports the position of Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Maria Angela Holguin told journalist on Monday in Baku.

"We hope that Azerbaijan will soon achieve restoration of its territorial integrity," she said.

Today the Foreign Minister of Colombia visited the tomb of national leader Heydar Aliyev and outstanding ophthalmologist Zarifa Aliyeva in the Alley of Honour.

According to Holguin, the main objectives of her visit to Baku are to discuss the issues of strengthening of relations between the two countries, to identify areas of cooperation, attract investors in the oil sector of Colombia and other issues.

The Colombian Foreign Minister expressed her country's desire to become closer to Azerbaijan.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994.The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four U.N. Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
