07 August 2012 [12:20] - TODAY.AZ
Ambassador and staff of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Syria left the country for their safety in connection with the situation in Syria, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.

The Azerbaijani side has created all conditions for the embassy staff to leave the country, the Ministry said.

"At present, there are no Azerbaijani citizens in Syria and Baku hopes that the situation in the country will soon normalize and diplomatic mission of Azerbaijan will restore its activity," the Ministry noted.

Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for about 17 months.

According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria has exceeded 17,000 people. About 230,000 people became refugees. About three million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say that they oppose the well-armed militants.
