Azerbaijani Community of Nagorno Karabakh voices attitude towards 'elections' in occupied territories

Public Union “The Azerbaijani Community of Nagorno Karabakh” issued statement on holding the so-called “presidential elections” in Nagorno Karabakh on July 19.

The Public Union reported that the statement says the holding of the so-called “presidential elections” in Nagorno Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, occupied by the Armenian armed forces, on July 19, 2012, caused a keen protest of the Azerbaijani people, including the Azerbaijani community of Nagorno Karabakh, “This issue was discussed and condemned at the meeting of Board of Directors of the Public Union. The Azerbaijani community of Nagorno Karabakh region announces that these illegal “elections” outrage the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan, norms and principles of the International law and do not consider the voting rights of the Azerbaijani population lived historically in Nagorno Karabakh region,” the statement reads.

The statement notes that the legitimate elections in Azerbaijan’s Nagorno Karabakh region can be held only after the withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from the occupied territories, return of Azerbaijani population, expelled from there, to their native lands, ensuring the peaceful life between Azerbaijani and Armenian communities of the region: “Contrary to the international legal norms, UN Charter and ignoring the decisions of the international organizations on Nagorno Karabakh, Armenia for the twentieth time organizes such elections in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. Armenia with its illegal acts strikes a serious blow to peaceful negotiations held within the OSCE Minsk Group for the settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict, initiatives of the international union to create peace and cooperation in the region and dialog opportunities between the communities. The entire world knows that the unrecognized illegal regime in the occupied areas of Azerbaijan is a criminal organization formed by Armenia on the basis of ethnic cleansing of the Azerbaijani population. This is precisely why the international organizations and world countries have never recognized such so-called “elections” held previously by Armenia in Nagorno Karabakh in order to cover its occupational policy”.

The Azerbaijani community of Nagorno Karabakh expressed its confidence in the statement that non-constructive acts of Armenia will be reproached by the international union and the most effective measures will be taken to end the aggressive policy of this country: “Formation of the relations based on mutual confidence between the Azerbaijani and Armenian communities of the region can make a positive contribution to the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. Thus, we consider that holding of meetings between the communities is necessary. We consider that a long-time peace in the region and restoration of the cooperation are impossible until withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan and the fair settlement of the conflict. We believe that the Nagorno Karabakh conflict will be settled fairly on the basis of international legal norms, the Azerbaijani people will return to their motherlands and peaceful life will be ensured between the two communities of the region.
