
The Azerbaijani Embassy in the US organized a remembrance ceremony in Washington on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Khojaly genocide. According to embassy, the ceremony brought together government officials, representatives of non-governmental organizations, foreign diplomats, media, experts of Washington-based think tanks, students and scientists, businessmen, members of Azerbaijani and Turkish Diasporas and others.
Addressing the ceremony, Azerbaijani Ambassador to the US Elin Suleymanov informed about Khojaly genocide. He noted that Azerbaijani people were deeply grieved upon the murder of innocent people, including children, women and old persons on the grounds of their ethnic background. The Ambassador also added that the Azerbaijani people will always commemorate Khojaly victims and informed that the Azerbaijanis do not seek revenge and they just want justice and peace.
Executive Director of US-based Karabakh Foundation Diana Cohen Altman underlined the importance of commemorating victims of the tragedy, saying it is necessary to pass information about Khojaly to future generations.
Visiting Azerbaijani MPs Asim Mollazadeh and Sevinj Fataliyeva also delivered speeches at the ceremony. Asim Mollazadeh said that the aims of perpetrators of Khojaly genocide were the occupation of Azerbaijan’s lands and ethnic cleansing in these areas. The Azerbaijani PM also underlined that he hopes truth and justice will prevail and the genocide perpetrators will be punished.
The photo-exhibition reflecting the genocide was demonstrated at the ceremony. The book, brochures, journal and CDs about the Khojaly tragedy and Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan were distributed among the participants.
