Turkish shadow theatre to perform in Baku

Baku audience will enjoy the performance of Turkish shadow- theatre Karagoz at the Azerbaijan State Puppet Theatre on May 19, Trend life reports.

The performance, organized by the State Puppet Theatre upon the initiative of UNIMA National Center in Baku with the support of Turkey's Culture and Tourism Ministry will be shown to the pupils from the boarding schools and orphanages.

The play tells the story of two masters – Karagoz and Hacivat, who were building a mosque in Turkey a few centuries ago. The production has been already staged in Baku and won great love of the audience.

Shadow puppetry is one of the oldest form of puppetry in the world. It began 1,000's of years ago in China and India. Shadow puppets are made of various materials including leather, made of leather including paper, plastic, wood, colored theatrical lighting filters etc.

The puppets are controlled by long rods and moved behind a white translucent screen made from paper or cloth. A lamp on the puppeteer's side of the stage provides the light.

The audience on the other side sees the moving shadows. Cut-out areas within the figures allow light to shine through.

Azerbaijan State Puppet Theatre has been created for children in 1931. Three Tales (Abdullah Shaig), Beautiful Fatma (M. Dilbazi), The little girl Tino (L. Babinskaya), Beautiful Vasilisa (Y.Z.Chernyak), Joke (Anar), Three fats» (Y. Olesya), Peri magic (A. Hagverdiyev), Voracious giraffe (Y. Torbai), Snow Maiden (A.A.Ostrovski), etc. are the best performances of the theatre.
