Azerbaijan adopts new customs code

The Azerbaijani Parliament has approved the new draft customs code in the third reading today.

The Azerbaijani parliamentary committees on economic policy, legal policy and state building recommended to send the draft Customs Code to the discussion of the plenary session of the Parliament the previous week.

"The adoption of the new Customs Code, which envisage introducing modern technologies, is an important element of improving transparency and combating corruption," the chairman of the parliamentary committee on legal policy Ali Huseynov said earlier.

Head of legal department of the State Customs Committee Senan Mukhtarov said amendments to the draft Code after the second reading were largely technical, and it was brought into line with the Law on normative legal acts.

"Within the changes, the period of considering administrative complaints on activity or inactivity of customs officials and making a decision on it reduced from 30 to 15 days, but this period may be extended by the head of the customs authority, which consider other complaint by 15 days and if additional documents and materials are required," said Mukhtarov.

The existing Customs Code was adopted in 1997.
