“20-year development strategy for solid waste management in the Greater Baku Area” to be ready next year

At the end of next year, “20-year development strategy for solid waste management in the Greater Baku Area” will be prepared and sent to state bodies for opinions, Head of Foreign Investments and Coordination of Aids Department of Ministry of Economic Development Sahil Babayev said.

To him, on May 20, 2009 loan agreement within the framework of “Absheron Environmental Rehabilitation Program” between the Government of Azerbaijan and the World Bank was signed for the Integrated Solid Waste Management Project: “The purpose of the project is to reestablish, improve and modernize solid waste management system. It includes potential construction, improve the activity of Tamiz Shahar JSC, reconstruction of Balakhani and other official polygons, improvement of collection and transportation system of wastes and implementation of appropriate preparation works for future investments in this regard”.

Babayev noted that one of important measures carried out within the project was to analyze the current state of solid waste management system and to prepare development strategy on forthcoming 20 years.

“Research works will be finalized until the end of this year, the legislation will be analyzed, preliminary results will be determined. Related measures on direct strategy will be taken next year and the strategy will be ready at the end of 2012 and then presented to state bodies for opinions”, he added.

Babayev said that, the years had not been determined in the strategy, but the strategy is expected to cover 2011-2031: “The strategy is not considered for concrete years and covers the next 20 years. The project concerns Baku and surrounding settlements”.

Note that, total cost of the project is $41.5 mln. Of these, $29.5 mln is financed by the WB, $12 mln by the Azerbaijani government.
