Global warming causes melting of glaciers in northern region of Azerbaijan

04 May 2009 [15:29] - TODAY.AZ
Global warming caused melting of glaciers in the northern region of the country. Specialists consider that about 50 percent of the glaciers melted in Guba within a century.
Melting of glaciers has become intensified recently. Guba resident Akif Najafzadeh told APA’s north bureau that when viewing from Guba, Shahdag and Babadag, the highest peaks of the Great Caucasus, had been covered with snow in July, August before.
“Most of the snow has melted in those mountains now, at the beginning of May,” he said.

Geographer Shikhmammad Seyidmammadov told APA that ecological balance was being violated in the region. He linked it to the deforestation and pollution of atmosphere. The geographer said glaciers melted quickly in Bazarduzu, Shahdag and Tufandag within the past century.

“Snow on the mountains melts in a shorter period of time. As a result of it, mountain rivers overflow in April-May, aridity is observed in summer. It mostly has negative influence on agriculture. Moreover, along with irrigation water, drinkable water resources are gradually reducing,” he said.

Local specialists underline the importance of complex measures to eliminate the cases having negative influence on ecological balance. They also offer to build reservoirs in the region.
