Polish ambassador to Azerbaijan: "We hope for success of the energy summit in Baku"

09 October 2008 [09:08] - TODAY.AZ
Day.Az interview with ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Poland to Azerbaijan Kshishtov Krayevski.

- Does Poland consider the issue of provision of its energy security by the help of partners from the Caspian region to be urgent?

- We are discussing this issue and we hope for the success of an energy summit on the said problem which will be held in Baku in November by initiative of the President.

You know that we discuss the implementation of the project of the Odessa-Brody-Gdansk pipeline and we are waiting for the clarification of the economic issue of this project. Certainly, we are discussing these issues.

- Does Mr.Kachinski intend to attend the Baku summit?

- I think yes. President Ilham Aliyev will send an invitation and I do hope that the President of Poland will arrive in Baku.

- Georgia always participates in all working and perspective regional energy projects. Don't you think that the recent events in Georgia challenged the security of export of Caspian energy sources to the European market?

- I think, no. You see what happened in Georgia after these events. The political powers have consolidated there, the world community, especially, the European Union paid attention to this country and supported it in the issue of its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Thus, I think, in this sense Georgia can be even more confident than earlier.

- Do you think the events will not repeat?

- I think theoretically everything, even a snowfall in Baku this month, is possible. But I hope they will not repeat and everyone has drawn a lesson from these events.

- Can the accession of the Caucasus participants of energy projects to EU and NATO ensure stability of energy supplies to Europe?

- It is important that the government and the president of Georgia have a striving  towards the Euroatlantic structures. Certainly, being NATO member for already 10 years, Poland feels stronger today and we feel that our security has consolidated.

- How would you respond to the announcements of the Russian powers that in fact the elements of US missile defense, which will be installed in Poland under the recent agreement between Warsaw and Washington, are targeting Russia, not Iran, like Americans say?

- This does not target Russia and it is our sovereign right. Poland is a member of NATO. This decision is not against Russia.
