Georgian Energy Minister: "Eurasian transport corridor will allow processing Caspian oil at the refineries of Europe and Western Ukraine"

05 June 2008 [12:41] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan will be able to export nearly 250 mln tons of oil per year by 2020, said Georgian Energy Minister Alexander Khetaguri at the international exhibit "Caspian Oil and Gas".
At the same time, he noted that the volumes are presented not considering oil from Turkmenistan.

Yet, the figures, voiced by the Georgian Minister, caused bewilderment of SOCAR vice president Khoshbakht Yusifzade, who could not help asking with surprise during the report where Khetaguri had taken these figures from.

The Minister, stressing importance of his country in exporting oil to the world markets, noted that Georgia, has necessary infrastructure, that is terminals in Batumi, Supsa, Poti and kulevi.

Speaking of the Odessa-Brody pipeline, Khetaguri stressed good conditions for development of the Eurasian transport corridor.

"The importance of this corridor is that it allows using existing infrastructure. This route will allow refining Caspian oil at the oil refineries of Europe and Western Ukraine", noted he.

Speaking about gas export, he noted that with assimilation of the second phase of the Shah Deniz project, the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzirum pipeline will be filled by 60%.

"Considering gas transportation not only from Azerbaijan, but also from other countries of the region, it will be fully filled. Georgia plays an important role in gas transportation from the north to the south", noted he.

He said currently Europe will get 60% from outside, which will require development of new transport routes.

"Currently, Europe has two large routes- Nabucco and Russian project. These two large projects are not mutually exclusive, as the gas extraction in the region is likely to grow", noted he.

Khetaguri also stressed existence of monopolist countries, which attempt "to impose pressure on producer countries in the issue of energy sources transit, yet the European Union attempts to prevent it".

At the same time, the Energy Minister did not name the countries, he implied.
